More About Christina

I grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley and earned my BA in Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing from UC Santa Cruz (go banana slugs!). I then swapped the redwoods for the city in pursuit of my MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College in New York. While there, I had one of my first opportunities to teach writing and I was hooked.

I taught composition at the State University of New York, Purchase College, and while there joined the Writing Center. Writing Centers and the learning support field are where I learned how to truly create a collaborative learning space with students, and where I found a passion that brought me back to California. Over the years, I've worked in learning and writing centers at community colleges and at four-year research universities with both undergraduate and graduate students. I’ve loved writing since I was a kid – both as an imaginative act and also as a collaboration. Writing is how I understand my world, and how I seek to help others understand their own.

In my free time, I write creatively as much as I can (which sometimes isn’t all that much!) and volunteer with organizations that are dear to my heart. I have a number of creative works published, including co-authoring a reimagining of the first female comic book character with her own title, Sheena: Queen of the Jungle. On the volunteer side of things, I have worn many hats but am currently serving as the grant writer for a literary non-profit called the Latinx KidLit Book Festival. This festival seeks to foster a love of story and literacy, as well as uplift the voices of Latinx creatives. I’m so excited to join the SBCC community, and so excited to learn and grow with you all.
