2025 - 2026 Kinesiology Student of the Year - South
Kaylee Lawson
2025-2026 Kinesiology Student of the Year - South; Kaylee Lawson, Santa Barbara City College. Statement text: Kaylee Lawson exemplifies the very best of what this award represents through her outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and athletic achievement as a two-sport student-athlete in Track & Field and Women's Basketball. Academically, Kaylee excels as a Kinesiology major and has been recognized as a 3C2A Academic All-State honoree. She also serves as a student athletic trainer in the SBCC training room, assisting with injury prevention, treatment, and taping - further demonstrating her commitment to the field she plans to pursue professionally. Kaylee's leadership is evident across every arena she enters. A starter and respected leader on the women's basketball team, she earned Western State Conference Defensive Player of the Year (2025) and All-Conference honors. In Track & Field, she serves as Sophomore Captain, represents her peers as a SAAC speaker, and captured first place in the Western State Conference Triple Jump. In each role, she leads with discipline, accountability, and resilience. Student Statement: People often describe me as soft-spoken, empathetic, and gentle. What they do not see are the experiences that shaped my strength. Born seven weeks premature and facing early medical challenges, I entered life fighting. After my parents' divorce when I was an infant, I was raised by a determined mother whose perseverance became my greatest example. Watching her navigate hardship taught me responsibility, empathy, and resilience. I grew up expecting challenges, not ease. White others anticipated "good days," I learned to prepare, adapt, and endure. Self-doubt may surface, but it never stays. Determination replaces it. I do not see myself as a victim of my circumstances - I see myself as strengthened by them. I may not be fearless, but I am unbreakable. My goal is to transfer to a four-year university, earn my bachelor's degree, and pursue a PhD in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training. Ultimately, I aspire to become a Certified Athletic Trainer in a collegiate setting, supporting student-athletes with the same care, resilience, and encouragement that shaped my own journey.
